Clayton County

Located to the south of Atlanta’s urban center off of I–75, Clayton County has a population of 273,718. It is Georgia’s 127th county, with the county seat in Jonesboro.

Of all the counties in the five–county Atlanta core, Clayton preserves more of its historic, rural identity. The author of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell, grew up hearing stories of the family plantation in Clayton County and she drew on them for her landmark novel. Later, parts of the movie adaptation were filmed in Clatyon County.

Clayton County is the home of Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta Airport.

The County supports 4–H program and the state–of–the–art Clayton County Schools Performing Arts Center. The county has it’s own university, Clayton State, and an active non–profit arts program called Arts Clayton.
