Cobb County

Cobb County is located to the northwest of the Atlanta city center, off of I-75. The 2008 population count was 698,158. Created out of Cherokee territory in 1832, the county was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a politician. The county seat, Marietta, was named for Cobb's wife, Mary.

Cobb County is the sight of the historical battle of Kennesaw Mountain, a Confederate victory and one of the bloodiest single days in the Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War. The Mountain is now a beautiful state park with a visitor center, hiking trails and memorials for the armies that fought there.

Cobb County was recently ranked in the top 100 wealthiest counties in the U.S., and is one of the most educated counties in the state of Georgia. It is home to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, and the headquarters of Home Depot and The Weather Channel. Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Plant and Dobbins Air Force Base are located in unincorporated Cobb, and the county is also home to the Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park.
